A whirligig of fate described by Susanna Moodie in Roughing It in the Bush spins back upon her family during the time they settled in the backwoods (1834-1840) near present-day Lakefield. Susanna’s writing offers us one kind of information about her past. Archaeology offers us a different kind of information about that past.

What did residents of a 17th century English plantation in Ferryland, Newfoundland throw down their privies (toilets)? Find out here. Because little is recorded about tailoring, dying techniques and fabrics until the 19th century, costume researchers must use other objects to give context. This presentation will show the evolution of costume from the first wave of European contact to North America in Newfoundland and Labrador to those brave pioneers of central Canada such as Catherine Parr Traill.

This lecture is presented as part of the Museum's "Word on the Hill Lecture Series".
